Alrewas village walks
Start from the bridge on Church Road and walk along the canal towpath past the Old Boat and out of Alrewas to Fradley Junction. The walk is approximately 2 miles and is also suitable for cycling. At the end there is the busy canal junction, the Swan Inn, British Waterways information centre and café and Fradley Nature Reserve. The reserve is on a reservoir and its centrepiece is a skilfully designed bird hide. Other features as you walk around the reservoir include gateways designed by local school children, sculptures, pools and benches.
This takes you around the old village of Alrewas. Points of interest along the route and historic facts can be found in 'A Walk Around the Village of Alrewas' produced by the Civic Society. These can be purchased from the Post Office (70p).
Start at the Crown Inn car park in Post Office Road. Turn right along Post Office Road and follow to the T-junction. Turn left over the canal bridge and then turn right immediately onto the towpath. Follow the towpath to Wychnor, pass under the farm access bridge and continue to the next lock.
Cross the canal on the first bridge and then continue to follow the towpath under the next bridge. Continue along the towpath to the next bridge, pass under and immediately turn right and step over the safety barrier onto the footway beside the road. Cross back over the canal by the road bridge on the right, and follow round to loop back over the canal and dual carriageway.
Take the lane to Catholme and at the T-junction turn right using the Quarry access road to cross the railway. Just before the gravel plant turn right and follow the farm access road beside the railway to the footbridge across the River Trent. Cross into the National Memorial Arboretum land, turn left and follow river bank, under the railway and follow footpath to finger post. Follow the riverbank to the point where it curves to the left by the memorial to the RNLI.
At this point turn to the right across the grass to the roadway, turn left and follow to the main buildings of the Arboretum. (a restaurant and toilets). Exit the Arboretum through the visitor centre and the main gate. Turn right and follow the Croxall Road to the level crossing and the A38. Cross the A38 and follow Main Street back to Post Office Road and your starting point. Alternatively a safer crossing of the A38 is by turning left and following the footway to the flyover, cross the road bridge and continue ahead turning into the village by way of Fox Lane and continuing back to Post Office Road.
